How Our Petitions Work

Outline of a successful online petition

START WITH A GOOD IDEA

Every great petition starts with a great idea. What’s something you wish were different and that you actually could effect with enough pressure?

TRUST YOUR GUT

Your experiences, emotions, and intuition are a better barometer than a lot of people give them credit. If you feel something is unjust and actionable, there's a good chance others would agree with you.

CREATE A PETITION IN THREE EASY STEPS

Turning that idea into action really is as easy as 1, 2, 3 with Avaaz Community Petitions! Here are the steps:
  1. Start: Enter the basic information about the campaign -- what do you want, who are you asking, and why?
  2. Launch: Check out a preview of your petition, edit anything you'd like to change, and make it live for people to sign.
  3. Share: You're ready to roll. Now, get the word out -- your petition won't sign itself!

BUILD, BUILD, BUILD

Once you've created your petition, it's off to the races to gather signatures.

DELIVER YOUR PETITION

When you're ready to deliver your petition, it's time to make sure it lands with impact with your target. The simplest thing to do is to email them a letter explaining the petition alongside a list of signatures and follow-up with a phone call to insure they got it. But don't be afraid to get creative -- the sky's the limit for what your can do with the petition! Consider taking the petition offline for an in-person delivery, arranging a meeting, doing a stunt to stick in their memory or get media attention, and anything else you can think of.

KEEP GOING

Delivering your petition once could be enough to win -- but maybe not. For some, it's only the first step in a broader campaign. Think through the issue from your target's point of view -- what would it take to get you to act if you were in their shoes? Maybe that means doing a bigger, more direct delivery, or gathering an even larger petition to prove your point more forcefully. Or maybe they'd respond better if the issue were in the news, in which case you can try to get the petition reported on.
